Biggest cannabis haul in years

A 43-year-old Danish man was yesterday sentenced to 19 months in jail for trying to smuggle about 15 kg of cannabis to the Faroes.

This is the largest one-time seizure of cannabis in many years. The cannabis is believed to have a street value of about DKK 4 million.

The man, who pleaded guilty and accepted the sentence, arrived in the Faroes on board ferry Norrøna on 10 October.

Customs officers found the cannabis inside a specially built compartment hidden beneath the boot of the car.

The hidden compartment could only be opened through a switch by the driver’s seat.

Police have confiscated the car and investigations are ongoing. Many other people have been charged in connection with this case.

This brings the total amount of cannabis confiscated this year above 40 kg, which is the largest-ever quantity for a single year.
