Fears over extensive Covid spread in Tórshavn

All students and staff at Glasir college, four Skúlin á Fløtum classes plus staff and children at the Norðasta Horn daycare have been told to stay home until further notice.

The health authorities worry about extensive Covid spread in the capital after three members of the same household tested positive yesterday.

According to the health ministry, the family contracted the virus in the Faroes, and their children attend the three institutions mentioned above.

All students and staff at these institutions are now being urged to get tested today and then do a follow-up test on Wednesday.

“As a safety precaution, we have decided to ask these people to stay home until Wednesday at the earliest. We don’t know the exact number of people, but we are talking at least 500 people who now need to get tested,” says Dr Bjarni á Steig, the health ministry’s Covid-19 consultant.

“Other schools and daycares have not been affected as far as we are aware.”

These measures apply to the entire Glasir college, the daycare in Norðasta Horn and the four Skúlin á Fløtum classes located in the school’s Gundadalur unit.

The doctor urges the public to be on high alert and act responsibly.

“Anyone who feels even the faintest symptoms should get tested immediately,” he says.
