Injuries are common for moped riders

One in three moped riders have suffered injuries, and many young people ride mopeds without a licence.
These are the key findings of a new survey which asked school pupils in forms 8, 9 and 10 about the dangers of moped riding.
The survey was carried out by Road Safety Council RFF, Betri Trygging and the Ministry of Culture.
Lovisa Petersen Glerfoss, who heads the RFF, concludes from the survey that moped riding is not without its dangers as one in three respondents reported having suffered injuries in moped accidents.

The survey reveals a variety of underlying causes for the relatively high incidence of accidents, she adds.
The most common of these are a general lack of caution among young people, and the fact that moped riders do not have the same physical protection as car drivers.
More than half of the respondents who had driven a moped had done so without holding a valid licence.
“There has been a long waiting list for moped licences in the past few years, but fortunately this appears to be improving,” she says.
“The good news is that many young people want to obtain a moped licence.”
