Costlier domestic travel for tourists
Tourists should pay more for public transport, says transport company. Minister agrees. Opposition MP likens idea to apartheid

Since September 2022, there have been three different price levels for domestic helicopter travel.

Permanent residents of the outlying islands pay one price, other Faroese citizens pay another while non-Faroese tourists pay another.

Last week, the company behind the Eysturoy-Tórshavn and the Streymoy-Sandoy subsea tunnels decided to increase the toll charge for rental cars. This was done in an effort to increase revenues from tourists.

And now, public transport company SSL is planning to charge extra from tourists travelling on coaches and ferries.

Dennis Holm, the minister of Fishery and Transport, supports the proposal from SSL, saying that tourists should pay up to three times as much as Faroese residents.

However, opposition MP Helgi Abrahamsen, is calling for an alternative solution.

“The proposed solution looks too much like the apartheid system,” he says.
