The Tourism Industry Association is calling for compulsory compensation for travellers who have bought tickets from an agency which goes out of business.

This comes in the wake travel agency WeTravel going bankrupt earlier this week.

Denmark has its Rejsegarantifonden travel guarantee fund, a private, self-governing institution that covers losses and expenses (return travel, reimbursement, etc.) for travellers who have signed a travel arrangement with a Danish established tour operator or an agent representing a foreign tour operator with an office in Denmark, which is subsequently declared bankrupt.

No reimbursements

No such fund exists in the Faroe Islands, which means that WeTravel customers are unlikely to be reimbursed for their tickets.

WeTravel had a first-year deficit of DKK 180,000 in 2017.

The company’s owner equity was also negative at the end of 2017, standing at minus DKK 130,000.
