Last weekend’s storms have caused great damage in Nólsoy, with large rocks washing up onto the shore, especially around the football pitch area.

This is not an unusual occurrence in Nólsoy, but the damage has never been greater than now, according to local Nikolaj Falck.

In 2005, Tórshavn City Council built a breakwater east of the village to help guard against heavy surf. But the breakwater does not serve its purpose, says Falck.

New solution needed

He suggests removing the breakwater and replacing it with a ditch that can redirect the seawater away from the village in stormy weather.

Annika Olsen, mayor of Tórshavn Municipality, visited Nólsoy earlier this week to assess the damage.

“It looks like the island has been cleft in two,” she said. “The City Council will do everything it can to find a lasting solution to this problem.”
