A Faroese child custody bill has been released for consultation.

Danish custody law is currently in force in the Faroes. However, as custody rights were recently transferred to Faroese authorities, the government has set out to review the existing legislation.

The new bill seeks to make it easier for unmarried couples to obtain joint custody of their children.

Provisions regarding access to children have been clarified and expanded to include access details for relatives other than the parents.

The bill also proposes compensatory access for the non-custody parent if the custody parent has denied access to the child without valid reason.

The 65-page bill has been released for consultation until 13 August. If adopted in Parliament, the new act will come into force at the start of next year.
