Elizaveta is pursuing her dream in the Faroes
Faroese teachers and Danish textbooks: it’s not easy for immigrants to study in the Faroes, but it can be done
“My Faroese teacher once told me that there’s no such thing as a stupid question. That meant a lot to me,” says Russian-born Elizaveta, 18

Elizaveta Volynetc grew up in Murmansk, Russia. Seven years ago, she moved with her family to the Faroes.

Speaking no Faroese or Danish and only basic English, it was not easy for her to start school in Gøtu Skúli.

“But everyone was really supportive,” says Liza, as her Faroese friends call her.

“Little by little, I started learning Faroese, and I have a Danish grandfather, who helped me learn Danish.”

One step at a time

As a little girl, Liza dreamed of becoming a doctor. Knowing that Faroese and Danish language proficiency was required for further education in the Faroes, she pushed on with her language learning.

After visiting a few nursing homes with her school, she decided to apply to the health care worker programme at Heilsuskúli Føroya in Porkeri, Suðuroy.

She was accepted to the programme and in November last year, she was awarded her health care worker certificate.

In March, Liza will embark on her next step toward her dream of becoming a doctor when she will enrol at the health visitor course at Heilsuskúli Føroya.
