Photos: national treasure reappears in revamped marina
Anyone who has taken a stroll through Tórshavn recently will have noticed that the square next to the Vágsbotnur marina has been undergoing some significant changes.
These changes have, in fact, been underway for the past few years.
In November 2020, the statue of Nólsoyar Páll was taken down and boxed away to make way for a skating rink. The rink plan was later ditched, but the statue remained boxed away.
Over the past few months, the entire area has been redesigned into a wooden floor structure around the square.
A key point in this redesign was the question of where to place the statue of Nólsoyar Páll.
The marina area is busy with traffic and pedestrians, leaving little space for old Páll on the square. So, in the end, the city council’s architects decided to place the statue in the marina itself.
After all, Nólsoyar Páll was a seaman, and the man in the statue gazes out to sea. He was also a poet, a farmer, a boat builder and a trader, who developed direct trade between the Faroes and mainland Europe and also introduced vaccination to the islands.
