Japan wants closer trade ties with Faroes

Japan is looking to gradually expand its trade ties with the Faroes.
This is one of the key messages from Manabu Miyagawa, Japan’s Ambassador to the Kingdom of Denmark, who is visiting the Faroes this week.
Later this week, a delegation of representatives from four large Japanese organisations – Mitsubishi, Mitsui, NEC and export organisation JETRO – will be joining the ambassador in the Faroes.

“There are many areas of cooperation in culture, trade and research that we are interested in expanding,” says Miyagawa.
“Our industry representatives are particularly looking at areas such as fishery, IT and energy.”
Expansion procedures, he adds, will not be implemented all at once. Rather, it will be a gradual process.

Salmon is the main export product from the Faroes to Japan, but other Faroese products are also of interest to the Japanese market.
“For example, a Japanese firm is already involved in a sustainable energy project on one of the southern islands of the Faroes,” he says.
“We will be identifying our areas of interest over the coming days.”
