In early 2020, Gist&Vist, which owns double Michelin restaurant KOKS, applied for permission to build a new restaurant by a gorge near Velbastaður, Streymoy.

The National Trust has now rejected this application, citing excessive intrusion into the natural surroundings and no prior affiliation with the area as the main reasons for the decision.

In an article from December last year, Gist&Vist’s managing director Jóhannes Jensen said construction would begin immediately if the building permission was granted.

He said it would take about 18 months to complete the project, meaning that whatever the outcome of the application, KOKS would be headquartered in Greenland in 2022 and 2023.

He added at the time that if the application was declined, it would be doubtful whether the restaurant will ever return to the Faroes.
