One step closer to cheaper flats in Tórshavn

Almost 200 people showed up at the first general meeting of Áhugafelagið Lutaíbúðir (the cooperative housing interest organisation) in Tórshavn yesterday.
“The attendance at the event and the general dedication we’re seeing suggests that cooperative housing is indeed a possibility here in the capital region,” says Hans Jacob Hermansen, who was elected as chairman of the organisation.
“We obviously have a lot of work ahead of us, but the levels of determination we saw at yesterday’s meeting tells me that we can make this happen.”

A housing cooperative is an alternative form of home ownership in which dwellers do not have outright ownership of the property in which they reside. Instead, each dweller is a shareholder in a corporation which owns one or more residential buildings.
