Faroese meat is too hard to find
Farmers want to make it easier for consumers to buy locally sourced meat

If you fancy a nice cut of Faroese lamb and you don’t speak the local language, you might be in for a challenge.

It’s not that there is a notable scarcity of Faroese meat – there’s plenty of sheep here and quite a few cows too – it’s just that grocery stores mostly sell imported meat.

This was one of the key conclusions at yesterday’s food sustainability conference, organised by the Faroese Environment Agency and the Agricultural Agency as part of a larger Nordic project.

”It is strange that Faroese farmers have to go online to sell their meat,” says Maria Gunnleivsdóttir Hansen, of the Environment Agency, who is one of the organisers of the event.

“We, the consumers who want Faroese meat, also need to go online to find it. Why can’t we just buy Faroese meat in the stores?”

Farmers present at the conference tended to agree with this view. One of these farmers is Sonja Dalsgaard Nolsøe from Saksun.

“We live differently than we used to, and our shopping habits have changed significantly in recent years,” she says.

“It is, for examples, no longer possible to buy meat in bulk, and that results in lots of extra work for us. The workload is simply too high for us farmers to get the entire supply chain running smoothly enough to get our products into supermarkets.”
