MP: green transition by 2030 is unrealistic

Helgi Abrahamsen, MP for opposition party Sambandsflokkurin, wants Parliament to revive the debate about the 2030 green energy transition vision.
“It is unrealistic to expect 100% renewable electricity production by 2030. We can come close, but squeezing out those last few percentages is more difficult than many of us think,” he says.
“It is still possible to reach 100%, but this would require huge investments. We have a few good wind farms, but to reach our 2030 target, we need ten fully functioning wind farms, i.e. a new one each year until 2030.”

The MP has submitted an extensive written enquiry in five sections to environment minister Ingilín Didriksen Strøm in which he calls for a thorough update on the government’s plans for the energy transition.
He believes that wind power remains the preferred alternative energy source.
“There are lots of options such as tidal wave energy, but I think we should continue to focus on wind power and ensure – as we have not done up to now – that all our windmills are suitable for Faroese weather conditions.”
