Skjáttan, a new app containing a digital driving licence and a digital ID card, was launched yesterday.

“Skjáttan is a massive step forward in our efforts to digitalise the Faroe Islands,” Nicolai Mohr Balle, the CEO of national digitalisation programme Talgildu Føroyar, said at yesterday's launch.

The app currently features a digital driving licence and a digital ID card, but the plan is to include official certificates soon.

Future upgrades are expected to include digital pension cards, library cards and other forms of identification.

The digital driving licence is currently only valid in the Faroes, but efforts are underway to make it work abroad.

Skjáttan is available for download on App Store and Google Play.

The Skjáttan project is a collaboration between Talgildu Føroyar, public transport firm SSL, the diocesan authorities, the Faroese Vehicle Administration and ten municipalities.
