Electricity provider SEV is waiting for the Parliamentary green light to start selling cheaper electricity for those who use heat pumps and electric cars.

Sirið Stenberg, the Minister of Environmental Affairs, has asked Parliament for authorisation to approve lower electricity prices for heat pumps and electric cars.

“SEV is ready,” says SEV’s CEO Hákun Djurhuus.

All formal arrangements have been made, and SEV has a technical solution allowing the electricity provider to determine when electricity is being used in a traditional way and when it is used in heat pumps and electric cars.

According to Djurhuus, once the legal framework has been approved, it will not take long for SEV to start selling electricity at prices determined by how it is used.

According to the bill presented to Parliament by the minister, SEV will be granted authorisation to lower its electricity prices for heat pumps and electric cars by DKK 0.40 + VAT per kilowatt hour. For the consumer, this is a price reduction of up to DKK 0.50 per kilowatt hour.

As soon as the legal authority is in place, the SEV committee will decide on the details of the price reductions.

The Minister of Environmental Affairs says that differentiated electricity prices for heat pumps and electric cars go some way towards achieving the political goal of powering all land-based activity with sustainable energy sources.

There are currently some 18,000 oil burners in the Faroes. The government’s goal is that at least half of all buildings in the country will be heated with green energy by 2015.

The bill will have its first hearing in Parliament tomorrow.
