Trade union slams new anti-discrimination bill
The bill seeking to ban workplace discrimination has come under fire from the Employers’ Association

30.01.2019 - 09:10

The industry minister’s proposal to ban workplace discrimination by law is poorly thought through, according to Føroya Arbeiðsgevarafelag (the Employers’ Association).

According to the Employers’ Association, the main problem with the new bill is that it fails to take Faroese labour market rules into account. The bill was initially submitted by independent MP Sonja Jógvansdóttir in 2017, but it was voted down at the time. It was then resubmitted earlier this month by Heðin Mortensen, the Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Labour, and the consultation deadline has now passed.

The Employers’ Association says that a consultation deadline of one week is far too short for such a comprehensive bill.

The association is, however, keen to point out that it is not opposed to banning workplace discrimination by law, but it insists that rushing it through Parliament is a bad idea.
