First Ukrainian refugee granted residence permit
The first residence permit issued under the new regulations for refugees was issued yesterday.
The new regulations will grant two-year temporary residence permits for up to 200 refugees, with the possibility of extension.
Red Cross Faroe Islands estimates that about 40 Ukrainian refugees have so far applied for residence permits under the new regulations.
Work permits
Upon arrival in the Faroes, refugees will be transported to the recently opened refugee centre in Tórshavn, where they will be offered to stay while their applications are processed.
A key component of the new regulation is that a temporary residence permit allows the holder to start work immediately as opposed to having to apply for a separate work permit.
Some Ukrainian refugees are expected to start work as early as next week.
Information about working in the Faroes
An information event is being prepared in which refugees learn about the Faroese labour market.
“We have set up a team aiming to optimise cooperation between authorities and service providers to get rid of as many complications as possible for refugees looking for work,” says integration minister Magnus Rasmussen.
This team consists of representatives from the Red Cross, police, the association of municipalities plus the ministries of trade, education, social affairs, health, foreign affairs and culture.
