There will be a more equal gender distribution in the new government if Aksel V. Johannesen, of Javnaðarflokkurin (social democrats), becomes Prime Minister.

This is the view of Brandur Mortensen Nolsøe, a coordinator at the Equal Rights Council and equal rights interest organisation Demokratia.

He is happy to see two more women being elected, but he believes the Faroes still lag behind other countries in terms of gender equality.

“We have seen in previous years that left-leaning parties have focused much more on gender equality than those on the right. The right-wing parties have not prioritised gender equality because they have seen no consequences of not doing so,” he says.

“I believe that if Javnaðarflokkurin will head the next government, we will see a lot of female ministers.”
