Early indications of a new governing coalition

Preliminary coalition talks between Javnaðarflokkurin (social democrats), Sambandsflokkin (unionists) and Framsókn (liberals) are going well, but the talks remain at a general level.

The three parties talked until 8pm last night and resumed their talks today.

Aksel V. Johannesen, who heads the negotiations, says that the three parties have had general discussions about 13 topics. As of 4pm today, there were three topics left to cover.

“The talks are still at a very general level,” he says.

“Our key focus at this point is to establish a healthy working relationship and identify general points of agreement and disagreement.”

The plan is to form a governing coalition before Christmas.

A Prime Minister must be nominated by 3 January, according to the Faroese Home Rule Law.

Nine people involved

Three representatives from the three parties take part in these preliminary coalition talks.

Aksel V. Johannesen, Djóni Nolsøe Joensen and Ingilín Didriksen Strøm represent Javnaðarflokkurin.

Bárður á Steig Nielsen, Helgi Abrahamsen and Johan Dahl represent Sambandsflokkurin, and Ruth Vang, Bjarni Kárason Petersen and Sólvit Nolsø represent Framsókn.
