Heaviest snowfall in years

The heavy snow that started falling late yesterday afternoon has created travel headaches across the country.
“The older members of our snow-clearing team say this is the heaviest snowfall they have seen in many years,” says Árni Jacobsen, regional manager of Landsverk.
Many cars ended up stuck in the snow, but most of them have now been dug out.
Although snow-clearing machines have been working overtime, many towns and villages were unreachable by road as of 10am this morning.

“The conditions on road to the Eysturoy village of Gjáar is so bad that it is pointless for us to even try to go there,” says Jacobsen.
In Sandoy, it was only possible to drive between Skopun and Sandur.
Other places unreachable by road at 10am this morning include Saksun, Haldórsvík, Elduvík, Skælingur, Syðradalur, Velbastað and the road between Hvannasund and Viðareiði.
Special driving arrangements have been introduced on the road to Vestmanna where up to two metres of snow have fallen.
