No TikTok for public servants

The Faroes have now joined a long list of countries that have banned public servants from using Chinese social media app TikTok.

MPs and staff at revenue office Gjaldstovan were yesterday told to delete TikTok from their phones and tablets out of national security concerns.

Gjaldstovan provides a security service to some 30 small to medium-sized businesses and institutions, which have now also been asked to delete the app.

The security risk is believed to be associated with interactions between TikTok and programs such as Outlook, Sharepoint and Teams that are provided through the Faroese national digital network.

On Monday, the White House told federal agencies that they have 30 days to delete TikTok from all government-issued devices.

And on Tuesday, the Danish Parliament directed all its staff to remove TikTok from their devices.

The bans come in the wake of renewed security concerns about user data finding its way to the Chinese government.
